From Learning the Model to Practising the Model.

Levels 1 and 2 provide the foundations of Integrative Attachment Therapy and develop competence in working with attachment patterns and the Three Pillars of treatment.

Level 3 is where these skills are integrated into real clinical practice.

Over two intensive days, participants work with their own de-identified case material, audio recordings, and clinical challenges. Through faculty-led supervision, deliberate practice exercises, role plays, and structured feedback, participants refine their ability to formulate cases, respond to complex clinical dynamics, and apply IAT with greater precision and flexibility.

This training represents the final core level of the IAT curriculum and a key step toward certification as an IAT Therapist.

What You Will Develop

By the end of Level 3, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse moment-to-moment shifts in attachment activation, collaboration, and reflective functioning
  • Detect subtle defensive adaptations, alliance ruptures, and therapist-patient interaction patterns
  • Apply the Three Pillars dynamically according to client presentation and treatment stage
  • Refine the use of the Ideal Parent Figure Protocol with complex and trauma-impacted clients
  • Design treatment strategies for challenging, comorbid, and longer-term cases
  • Strengthen therapist presence, self-regulation, and use of countertransference
  • Use supervision and deliberate practice to accelerate clinical development

How Learning Happens

Level 3 uses a deliberate-practice approach to therapist development.

Participants bring:

  • a de-identified clinical case
  • a concise written formulation
  • a short audio or video recording from clinical practice
  • a specific clinical question or challenge

Faculty work directly with this material to identify moments where clinical decision-making, pacing, formulation, collaboration, or intervention strategy can be strengthened.

Learning includes:

  • Case presentations and formulation review
  • Audio and video analysis
  • Faculty-led supervision
  • Live role-play and replay of clinical moments
  • Focused deliberate-practice drills
  • Structured triad exercises
  • Behavioural feedback and competency development

Preparation Requirements

To gain maximum benefit from Level 3, participants are asked to prepare:

  • One current or recent adult psychotherapy case
  • A concise 1–2 page case formulation
  • A clearly defined clinical question or treatment challenge
  • A 5–10 minute de-identified audio or video excerpt

The most valuable cases are those involving complexity, uncertainty, treatment impasses, attachment-related challenges, rupture repair, or questions about the application of the Three Pillars.

A Key Step Toward Certification

Level 3 marks the completion of the three core levels of Integrative Attachment Therapy training.

Together with:

  • Five IAT Group Supervision sessions
  • Two Individual Supervision sessions

Level 3 forms part of the pathway toward certification as an IAT Therapist.

Certification is awarded based on demonstrated clinical competence and readiness for independent application of the model, as assessed by IAT Senior Faculty.
