From Understanding Attachment to Practising Attachment-Focused Therapy

Level 1 introduces the foundations of Integrative Attachment Therapy and the Three Pillars of attachment repair.

Level 2 focuses on the next developmental challenge: learning to recognise, formulate, and respond to attachment dynamics as they unfold in real clinical work.

Through advanced training in attachment-based case formulation, deliberate practice, clinical discrimination, and subtype-specific intervention, participants deepen their ability to work effectively with dismissing, anxious-preoccupied, and disorganised attachment patterns.

This is where IAT moves from conceptual understanding into clinical application.

From Knowledge to Clinical Capacity

Many therapists can describe attachment patterns.

Far fewer can recognise those patterns as they emerge moment-to-moment in a therapy session.

Far fewer still can adapt interventions in real time while maintaining therapeutic presence, regulating their own responses, and responding effectively to attachment activation, rupture, trauma-related processes, or dysregulation.

Level 2 was designed to develop these capacities.

The focus is not on learning more theory.

The focus is on becoming a more capable attachment-informed therapist.

Advancing your practice of IAT

WHAT MAKES LEVEL 2 DIFFERENT?

Unlike Level 1, which focuses primarily on understanding the model, Level 2 focuses on deliverate-practice-based learning.

Participants repeatedly practise specific therapeutic skills, receive immediate feedback, make corrections, and gradually work with increasing clinical complexity.

WHAT YOU WILL DEVELOP
  • Clinical Discrimination
  • Attachment-Based Case Formulation
  • Flexible Use of the Three Pillars
  • Advanced Ideal Parent Figure Skills
  • Rupture Recognition and Repair
  • Therapeutic Presence Under Pressure

Working With Different Attachment Organisations

Dismissing Attachment

Learn to work effectively with deactivation, emotional minimisation, idealisation, reduced self-awareness, and discomfort with proximity and dependency.

Anxious-Preoccupied Attachment

Develop greater skill in responding to attachment hyperactivation, reassurance-seeking, externalised regulation, and heightened sensitivity to perceived abandonment.

Disorganised Attachment

Learn to work with fragmentation, instability, dissociation, fear, and disruptions in coherence of mind while maintaining safety, structure, and therapeutic organisation.

How Learning Happens

Level 2 combines:

  • Faculty teaching
  • Live demonstrations
  • Clinical hot seats
  • Deliberate-practice drills
  • Structured triads
  • Observer feedback
  • Treatment planning exercises
  • Clinical integration discussions

A Pivotal Step Toward Certification

Together with supervision and competency development, Level 2 forms part of the pathway toward certification as an IAT Therapist.

It is where participants begin moving from understanding attachment concepts toward developing the capacities required to apply them effectively in practice.

Completion of Level 2 is required before attending Level 3.
