Advanced Deliberate Practice for IAT Practitioners

Move Beyond Understanding the Model. Develop Mastery in Using It.

Exceptional therapists are not defined simply by what they know, but by how skilfully they bring that knowledge to life in the therapy room.

The IAT Clinical Mastery Series offers a unique opportunity to refine your clinical practice through focused, experiential learning with the co-founders of Integrative Attachment Therapy. Through the proven methodology of deliberate practice, you will strengthen the therapeutic skills that matter most in creating secure attachment experiences and lasting therapeutic change.

Open to practitioners who have completed at least IAT Level 2.

From Learning the Model to Mastering the Practice

Most professional trainings focus on helping therapists understand a therapeutic model.

Clinical expertise develops differently.

Research consistently shows that expert performance is built through deliberate practice: the systematic identification, repeated practice and progressive refinement of specific therapeutic skills, supported by expert feedback.

The IAT Clinical Mastery Series has been designed to provide exactly this kind of learning environment.

Rather than acquiring more theory, you will strengthen the clinical capacities that enable you to apply Integrative Attachment Therapy with increasing confidence, precision, flexibility and effectiveness.

Why Deliberate Practice?

Deliberate practice is one of the most extensively researched methods for developing expertise across fields including psychotherapy, medicine, elite sport and music performance.

Unlike traditional learning, deliberate practice focuses on refining specific skills through cycles of:

  • focused practice
  • immediate coaching
  • repeated application
  • increasing complexity
  • reflective integration

This enables therapists to develop not only greater knowledge, but genuine clinical fluency.

What Makes the Clinical Mastery Series Different?

Unlike traditional supervision or case consultation, the Clinical Mastery Series is specifically designed to strengthen your therapeutic performance.

Rather than primarily discussing clinical work, we actively practise it.

Each session centres on one fundamental question:

Which therapeutic skill, if strengthened, would most enhance your effectiveness with clients?

Together, we identify that skill, create structured practice around it, receive expert feedback, and immediately integrate the learning through repeated application.

What You Will Develop

Throughout the series, participants progressively develop greater:

therapeutic presence and embodied attunement

moment-to-moment clinical discernment

confidence applying the IAT model flexibly

understanding of complex and nuanced attachment adaptations

precision in case conceptualisation

confidence selecting and sequencing interventions

ability to recognise subtle attachment dynamics

effectiveness when working with disorganised attachment

capacity to repair therapeutic ruptures

self-trust as an attachment-informed therapist

flexibility in adapting interventions to individual clients

overall clinical mastery

Typical Areas of Practice

Depending on participants’ developmental needs, sessions may explore skills such as:

  • Ideal Parent Figure work
  • Safe Haven and Secure Base interventions
  • tracking attachment activation
  • affect regulation
  • scene work
  • working with disorganised attachment
  • responding to therapist uncertainty
  • rupture repair
  • pacing therapeutic interventions
  • strengthening corrective emotional experiences

Each cohort evolves around the actual clinical challenges participants bring into the room.

What Happens During a Typical Session?

Each session combines experiential learning with focused skills development.

Activities may include:

  • brief faculty teaching
  • live demonstrations
  • structured role plays
  • deliberate practice exercises
  • fishbowl demonstrations
  • breakout practice groups
  • repeated skills rehearsal
  • expert coaching and feedback
  • integration and reflection

Participants repeatedly practise specific therapeutic skills until increasing confidence and fluency are achieved.
